Do You Need an eTicket for a Layover in the DR?

January 28, 2025 · 4 min read

If you have a connecting flight through the Dominican Republic and you're wondering whether you need to complete the eTicket - you're not alone. This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get. Here's the clear answer.

The Short Answer

It depends on whether you pass through immigration (i.e., whether you officially "enter" the Dominican Republic).

Airside Transit Only

If you stay in the secure international terminal and do not pass through Dominican immigration, you generally do not need an eTicket.

Entering the Country

If you pass through Dominican immigration at any point - even briefly - you do need a completed eTicket and QR code.

What Counts as "Entering" the Dominican Republic?

You are considered to be entering the Dominican Republic if:

  • You need to collect checked luggage and re-check it for your onward flight
  • Your connecting flight departs from a domestic terminal (requiring an immigration stamp)
  • You exit the secure zone for any reason (hotel stay, overnight connection, etc.)
  • Your airline's check-in process routes you through the immigration hall

The Official Guidance

The Dominican government's official position is that the eTicket is required for all entry and exit. The eTicket form explicitly distinguishes between "entry" and "in transit" - and transit passengers who do not pass through immigration can indicate their status as transit.

However, in practice, airlines often check for an eTicket QR code at the departure gate for all passengers heading to the Dominican Republic - regardless of whether the passenger is transiting or entering. This means even true airside transit passengers sometimes encounter requests for eTicket documentation from their origin airline.

When in doubt, complete the eTicket

If you have any uncertainty about your itinerary or the transit rules at your specific airport, it's far better to have a completed eTicket and not need it than to be turned away at check-in. The cost of an eTicket is minimal compared to a missed flight.

Punta Cana vs. Santo Domingo: Does It Make a Difference?

The same rules apply at both Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) and Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ). The distinction is solely between airside transit (staying in the secure international zone) and entry (passing through Dominican immigration).

Check your specific itinerary and confirm with your airline whether your luggage will be checked through to your final destination or whether you'll need to collect it and re-check it.

Summary

  • Pure airside transit (no immigration) → eTicket not required by law, but check with your airline
  • Passing through immigration (even briefly) → eTicket required
  • Overnight layover or hotel stay → eTicket required
  • Luggage pickup and re-check → eTicket likely required
  • Unsure? → Complete the eTicket to be safe
