Dominican Republic Entry Requirements 2025

February 3, 2025 ยท 6 min read

Heading to the Dominican Republic in 2025? Here's a complete, up-to-date checklist of everything you need to know before you board your flight. Bookmark this page - you'll want to refer to it before every trip.

Quick Checklist

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity from arrival date)
  • Completed Dominican Republic eTicket (QR code)
  • Round-trip airline ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Sufficient funds for your stay
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)

1. Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in the Dominican Republic. This is a strict requirement - airlines will typically check at check-in and deny boarding if your passport is expiring within 6 months.

This rule applies to every traveler in your party, including children. Children's passports often expire sooner (5-year validity in many countries), so double-check before booking your trip.

2. Dominican Republic eTicket (Required)

Since 2020, every traveler entering or exiting the Dominican Republic must complete the government's electronic eTicket form. This replaced three separate paper forms previously distributed on flights:

  • International Boarding and Disembarkation Card (immigration)
  • Customs Declaration Form
  • Traveler's Health Affidavit

The eTicket must be completed before you board your flight. Upon completion you receive a QR code, which airlines and Dominican customs use to verify your submission. The eTicket is required for all nationalities, all ages, and all trip purposes including tourism, business, and family visits.

The official government portal can be slow and confusing - especially in Spanish. Services like eTicketEasy handle the form on your behalf and deliver your QR code to your inbox.

3. Round-Trip Ticket Requirement

Airlines flying to the Dominican Republic require passengers to show proof of a round-trip ticket (or onward ticket to another destination). This has been a requirement since April 2023 and is checked at the departure gate before you board.

If you have a one-way ticket, you may be asked to purchase a return ticket or show sufficient proof of onward travel before being permitted to board.

4. Customs Declarations

Cash or monetary instruments totaling $10,000 USD or more (or the equivalent in any other currency) must be declared upon entry and exit. Failure to declare can result in fines or confiscation.

Goods purchased abroad are subject to customs duties if they exceed the personal exemption allowance. You will need to declare goods on the eTicket customs section.

5. Length of Stay

Most tourists are admitted for up to 30 days on arrival, though immigration officers may grant longer stays at their discretion. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you should apply for an extension through the Dominican immigration authority before your initial period expires.

If you overstay without an extension, you will be charged a fine at the airport when you depart. The fine increases with the length of your overstay.

6. Travel Insurance

While not a legal requirement, travel insurance covering medical emergencies is strongly recommended. Healthcare in tourist areas is generally good but can be expensive for foreign visitors without coverage. Many airlines and tour operators also require proof of travel insurance for certain packages.

7. Vaccinations

As of 2025, there are no mandatory vaccination requirements to enter the Dominican Republic (COVID-19 vaccination and testing requirements were lifted). However, it is recommended to be up to date on routine vaccinations and to consider hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations depending on your travel plans.

Check with your doctor and your country's official travel advisory for the most current health guidance before departing.

8. No Visa Required for Most Nationalities

Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and most Latin American countries do not need a visa to enter the Dominican Republic as tourists.

Citizens of a small number of countries do require a visa. If you are unsure whether your nationality requires a visa, check with the Dominican Republic's consulate or embassy in your country before booking travel.
